Learn how to use checkdisk in Windows 7/Vista to check your drive for errors


The CheckDisk Utility, also known as CHKDSK, is a disk utility program found in Microsoft Windows. Use of this utility is part of the recommended routine maintenance for keeping a PC running at peak performance. The checkdisk utility scans the hard drive(s) for bad storage blocks on the physical disk. Files stored on bad blocks may become corrupted or inaccessible, so the system attempts to identify and move those files before disabling those storage blocks.

Note: Disk check cannot run when windows is running so will be scheduled to run on next boot. This means the machine is not usable while this check is been performed. This can sometimes be a long time so only run disk check when you know you will not be using the computer.

Frequency – every 6 months
Time to run – 30mins – 3 Hours

1. Go to the start button and select computer

2. On the new screen select the hard drive you want to run checkdisk on (In most cases this is drive C). Right click on it and select properties

3. On the properties window select Tools and then under error checking select Check Now

4. In the new box that pops up select both (make sure there is a tick in both boxes) and press start

5. A new box will appear with 2 buttons. Select schedule disk check. The next time your computer boots checkdisk will run so restart your computer now or when you have finished but bear in mind that the next time it boots it could be upto 3 hours before you will be able to use it.
