In our last K9 web protection tutorial we looked at how you download and install K9 web protection it and in this tutorial we are going to look at some of the administration section so we can filter and restrict internet access on the computer using K9 web protection. The ability to restrict internet access at specific times is one feature that parents find very useful.
There are various sections you can set in the administration panel but we are going to look at the first 3 which are the major ones that you will use to restrict internet access and restrict the time spent on the internet. These sections are Web Categories to block, Time Restrictions which is very useful and web site exceptions.
First of all we need to open the K9 web protection administration page. You can do this by going to your Start/Windows button at the bottom left of your screen and then selecting all programs. Find bluecoat and select Blue coat K9 web protection Admin.
You will see a new browser open with the following screen.
We are currently looking at setup so press the setup option. You will now be asked to enter your password. This is the password you set when you installed K9 web protection.
Once logged in you will be presented with the options screen The first one we are going to look at is the Web Categories section.
These are default categories in K9 web protection administration that set certain topics to be automatically blocked.
High – Is quite strict in its restrictions as it restricts social media as well as your normal sites that you would not want your children to access.
Default – Is the most common setting this blocks all the standard things most people don’t want their children to access on the internet.
Moderate and Minimal – Are exactly as you would expect and not really recommended unless you are only interested in blocking pornography and security threats.
Monitor – This blocks no categories and leaves the internet unfiltered but it does log all the activity such as sites visited and terms search for.
Custom – Allows to choose the categories you want to block from the list
The second menu option on the left is time restriction. This part of the K9 web protection administration panel allows you to restrict internet access to certain times of the day or night This is often used when a child has a computer in their room and you want to restrict internet access after a particular time (so they go to sleep) There are 3 settings here and apart from the first one they block access to both allowed and blocked sites at specific times.
Unrestricted – No time restrictions access allowed at all times.
Nightguard – Disables internet browsing between a set time on an evening (i.e. between 10pm and 7am)
This allows you to set times when internet access is to be blocked or allowed. The advantage of this over night guard is it allows you to set a schedule for the week. For example you may want to stop internet access after 9PM on a weekday but on a Saturday allow access until 11PM. Using custom you can do this.
As you can see from the image above we have blocked internet access between the hours of 8PM and 7AM every weekday but on Friday night and Saturday night we have let them have a little longer with it not been a school night and giving them until 11PM.
The red areas are when we have decided to restrict internet access and the grey and white areas are when internet access is allowed (Remember the web categories filter is always active regardless of the times set)
Web Site Restrictions
This section allows you to change what sites are blocked or allowed that are not covered by the default categories.
The program is not perfect and on occasion you may find that the software is restricting internet access to a site that you know is safe and are happy to have your children access. You can add this site to a safe list by entering it in the Always Allow section on the right and clicking add to list.
The same can be done if you find a site is not been blocked that you would prefer was. Add it to the always block list. You can see below we have added Google to our block list. When you add a site you will see it appear below. The red X allows you to remove the site from the block or allow list.
These 3 setup pages will allow you to restrict internet access to set times and based upon web categories that you can define. Look out for further tutorials on K9 web protection and other features.
