What Processor Do I Have? – Getting System Information

There are a number of ways to find out things like what processor do I have? how much memory do I have and all other kinds of things about your computer. We are going to look at some of those ways and some free tools you can use to get your system information.

Some of these tools will give you just the basics of your system (like the windows system information tool) but others will give an in-depth look at what is running your machine. This is helpful for not only informational purposes but is essential if you are looking for drivers or updates for components in your computer or just want to know your motherboard or graphics card model without opening up your machine.

All these tools are free to use or in the case of the first tool come pre-installed with all windows operating systems

Windows System InformationWindows system information

Windows system information will give you a basic look at what your system is running including what processor you have, how much memory you have and what operating system you are running. It will also show you the name of the computer and which workgroup it is a part of.

To open system information click your start button and on the right hand side hover over Computer and right-click. Select properties. A new window will pop up like the one to the left (click to enlarge) that will give you your basic system information.

Speccy what processor do I haveSpeccy

Speccy is a tool from the creators of the popular ccleaner and defraggler and allows you to view your system in a lot greater detail than the windows built-in tool does. The program is small and easy to install.

Using speccy you can see everything from your basic system information to things such as:

  • Motherboard model number
  • Graphics cards
  • Hard drive models
  • Detailed CPU information
  • Detailed motherboard information and voltages

Speccy will also give you the temperatures of the components running in your computer to give you an indication of overheating issues which is the only one of our tools that does this so well.

Belarc system advisorBelarc advisor

Belarc advisor is another free tool that allows you to view your system information and more detailed information on the parts in your computer. Although not quite as detailed on things like the processor voltages and temperatures as speccy is it is still a very useful tool.

The big advantage that belarc advisor has over other tools is that it also shows you the product keys and licence details of some software installed on your computer which is great for backing up those important Product keys.

Belarc also looks at your virus protection and windows updates to ensure they are up to date and gives you the opportunity to make your PC more secure with helpful tips using its system security status. All round an excellent tool that has many uses.

System information for windowsSystem information for windows (free home edition)

Again this is another excellent too that like belarc advisor offers much more than just system information. I do find personally out of all the 4 programs this to unfortunately be the slowest although this should not put you off trying it. SIW offers a range of system information and is very simple to use and best of all like our other programs it is free.
